GWEN RAKOTOVAO: CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Gwen Rakotovao who is a dancer, choreographer and teacher, will stage a preview of her solo show in the auditorium of Alliance française on January 18.
Of French-Madagascan descent, Rakotovao trained in Normandy in northern France where she studied with several choreographers and danced in festivals such as Viva Cité and Transeuropéennes. After studying at the professional training center Institut Rick Odums in Paris, she went to New York where she attended the famous Alvin Ailey American Dance School. She later joined the BodyStories: Teresa Fellion Dance company, and in 2011 created her own dance company which has performed in France and New York where she both was a dancer and artistic director. Her passion for dance has also led her to teach in France and other countries.
In 2012, she was awarded a prize during the Concours International de Biarritz competition in France.
Two shows including one preview
While planning her show for Bangkok, Rakotovao started working on a new dance inspired by the poem “A une passante,” or “To a Woman Passing By,” by French writer Charles Baudelaire. This dance, which she will preview in Bangkok, invites the audience to imagine themselves as the poet in search of “the softness that fascinates.” After a short intermission, she will perform “Budda Jam”, where her humorous and whimsical portrait of an automaton is set to American composer Dorian Wallace’s music.
